The "Evil Guys List"? "Free Journalism" in the Service of US Foreign Policy

Vatic Note:   This is a tough one for me.   The credibility of the author of this article is important if we are to give  credence to  this contention about the Reporters without Borders.   Please read since disinformation, propoganda, and provocateuring is running rampid right now and its gone global, not just here.   Verifying contentions such as this is important, but it was  enough of a serious nature to put it up for contemplation and observation in the future.   Not a problem yet til verified but if it is, then solutions will have to be considered.  we certainly have to consider solutions to the lack of MSM almost everywhere these days.  Is this just feeding the angst into the WW III the elite have planned with everybodies leaders on both sides of this conflict???  It seems quite a few are feeding the beast on this issue.   World War III had to begin or these elite will go down as time goes by.   They absolutely need to nuke us to shut us up, get our numbers down, starve us through all the destruction etc etc.   So I am cautious these days about these finger pointings that lead us to that WW situation.   It will prove interesting to see which side on this issue proves to be the perveyor of the war movement.

The Role of Reporters without Borders

Global Research, May 5, 2010

An organization calling itself Reporters Without Borders (RWB; French: Reporters sans frontières, or RSF) has just named Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, China’s President Hu Jintao, Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Kazakhstan’s Nursultan Nazarbayev and Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko to their list of Forty Worst Predators of Press Freedom for 2010. Most significant about their list of ‘bad guys’ is the geopolitical relation of those leaders and those countries to the current ‘enemies list’ of the US State Department. That is no accident, as becomes clear when we look more closely at who funds RWB.

Alex Jones on Greece: Battle against oligarchs (On Russia Today)

Vatic Note: This is a follow up from the Greg Palast interview on Alex Jones program. What makes this incredible is Russia Today is seen globally and very much in Europe and that means our alternative press expose's are reaching out across national boundaries which is part of our mission here on this blog. Hopefully this will continue the expansion of awareness, not only nationally, but globally. If the elite want to globalize, they may not like how it happens especially in the information dissemination category. But that is the only globalizing we will assent to in this agenda. The video is powerful. No matter what you may think of Alex, he sure does have a quick mind and immediate response skills that put the mainstream media to shame that always have to think of a politically correct way to speak to an issue, and that is one thing this interview with Alex fully highlights. Just see the difference. He maybe a jerk, but he is our jerk and doesn't feed the pandering side of today's journalism.

RussiaToday — March 26, 2010 — Diplomats at an EU summit in Brussels have accepted a bailout plan for Greece. The county's massive budget deficit and financial instability caused the Euro to plummet it a ten month low against the dollar. Radio host Alex Jones believes that the Greek debt crisis has been engineered by predatory financiers looking to make big bucks at the expense of poorer nations.

Did BP, Transocean Lawyers Spin The “James” Oil Rig Survivor Interview on The Mark Levin Show?

Vatic Note: Here is another take on the interview, which I questioned when it first came out. Who was this person, who got him to call the show, but why particularly Mr. "Levins" show. Why did he mistakenly say Bomb twice and then retract??? So many questions and now add this and its beginning to smell again. I actually got into trouble with a reader for making too much out of this. So given he may have a point, I present this to you for your own addition to the previous offer I made and see for yourself what you think, keeping in mind we already know 9-11 was an inside, mossad false flag, that trading on stocks affect by 9-11 occurred the day before, as it did on this massive destruction, so its very possible this could have been similar. However, I will let you read it and decide for yourself.

Before reading this, please watch this video and notice it follows the fire frm beginning to end even when the pontoons are finally gone and only the derrick is left.   And listen to the interview with an small oil co owner who has inside info on something that happened two hours before the explosion.  Would this contributed to gross negligence or would it mitigate it?

This video and information on Bureau of Land management visiting the rig two hours before the explosions is very telling and the video itself shows something much different that what we have been shown in cuts from the MSM, SO WATCH .  Here is the link, Bureau of Land management was doing a surprise inspection on oil Rig 2 hours before it exploded

Did BP, Transocean Lawyers Spin The “James” Oil Rig Survivor Interview on The Mark Levin Show?
http://www.lawco.com/424/did-bp-transocean-lawyers-set-up-the-james-oil-rig-survivor-interview-on-the-mark-levin-show/

Author: Lawco Staff

Steve Gordon, maritime lawyer, representing the family of Karl Kleppinger, Jr, one of the missing 11 oil rig workers aboard the Transocean Deepwater Horizon disaster on April 20, 2010, claims that an oil rig survivor’s story was set up by British Petroleum (BP) and Transocean lawyers for the purpose of spinning the account of the disaster. The interview was broadcast on The Mark Levin Show on Friday, April 30, 2010.

An anonymous caller referred to as “James”, the survivor from the disaster, phoned into the radio talk show and told his account of what happened on the rig that fateful morning. Gordon believes that this interview was set up by the lawyers at Transocean and BP.

Steve Gordon goes on to say on his Deepwater cause and investigation web page:

After 8 days of “silence”, all of a sudden, an unnamed “caller” calling himself James, who says that he was actually on the Deepwater Horizon [DWH], calls into a radio show in Dallas, Texas and wants to “clear the air”. This, I am sure will be proven to be a planned effort on the part of the lawyers at Transocean and BP.

(1) The Jones Act, a law that allows injured victims in a maritime incident to receive economic damages, covers the Kleppinger Family’s claim. A Jones Act violation is easily going to be provable in this disaster and, therefore, the “liability” of Transocean, as to our client, is going to be easily made. But the Kleppinger case, or any other DWH injured workers’ claim, does not stop with finding “liability” as that is just half of the legal equation……The other half is “damages”. If you listen to the caller, he explains what happens as sort of a “surprise” and one attributable to “Mother Nature” and, therefore trying to negate a finding of gross negligence;

(2) However, gross negligence is a possibility in this case against Transocean and/or BP. But, neither Transocean nor BP is “admitting” the Jones Act allows punitive damages in a Jones Act Wrongful Death Claim.

1. This is very important and I do not want to confuse anyone so I will re-state this another way. I believe that Transocean and BP are going to come into our court case and say “We Stipulate to Liability”, in other words they will “confess” liability as to negligence. Then they will argue that “gross negligence” is not available as a matter of law! By arguing this, they will then take the position that they will not have to produce all the (1) statements and (2) documents related to their investigation, or (3) the videos of the rig floor that get sent to shore in “real time”; (4) or all the memoranda related to discussions of the very thing occurring offshore that actually did happen on the Deepwater Horizon; because, once all these things are produced, then gross negligence will be “unveiled” and a jury could then award punitive damages.

2. Another thing is, the questioner asks “did they [the 11] die instantly?” He just ask this out of the blue. Well, once again, this is a very important aspect of the recovery of the Kleppinger family and it is called “Conscious Pain & Recovery of Karl Kleppinger, Jr. just prior to his death”

3. “You can’t win against Mother Nature” the Caller says; then he says, “This was a ….. literally could have been ….a once in a lifetime freak accident or it could be negligence”. Notice no mention of gross negligence. He attempts to portray this event as completely unexpected and not one as a result of poor decisions at the corporate level.

Gordon says to listen to the interview with an “ear” with the analysis that Transocean and BP are trying to explain how it was just “negligent” but not “grossly negligent”.

Top Recipient of Political Cash from BP, Goldman Sachs, Defense Contractors AND Healthcare Giants: Barack Obama

Vatic Note:  Keep in mind that Goldman Sachs shorted on the owner of the rig just before the blowout.  Also remember who owns BP.  That was given on here a few days back.  Goldman sachs is one of the share holders of the major investor in BP and is also independantly an additional institutional shareholder.    http://www.dailyfinance.com/company/bp-p-l-c/bp/nys/institutional-ownership as well as this one.... http://investing.businessweek.com/businessweek/research/stocks/people/relationship.asp?personId=24248740&ticker=STT:US

Solution:  Recommended by someone with a petition  going around "The US take over BP".   That would solve a whole bunch of problems, although BP's owners run the government, so it would require we get rid of the people in gov that we currently have in the next election and replace them with independant candidates and third party candidates.  No more voting for the two wings of the neocon party.
Top Recipient of Political Cash from BP, Goldman Sachs, Defense Contractors AND Healthcare Giants: Barack Obama.   Lets remember why this needs to be done.  Just look at the platform again.

Top Recipient of Political Cash from BP, Goldman Sachs, Defense Contractors AND Healthcare Giants: Barack Obama

Washington’s Blog

Preface: The story that Obama was the top recipient of political contributions from BP is going viral [1] today. I thought I’d put the story in a little context.

As a side note, I voted for Obama [2] and had high hopes for him … until he appointed Summers, Geithner, various Bush re-treads and industry shills, and then showed that he would play footsie with the big boys instead of the American people.

Politico reports [3]
BP and its employees have given more than $3.5 million to federal candidates over the past 20 years, with the largest chunk of their money going to Obama, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Obama apparently also got more contributions from Exxon and Chevron [4]

And Obama had the most political contributions [5]  from Goldman Sachs in 2008 of all senators. And Goldman gave more to Obama than any other presidential candidate [6] , and was Obama’s second-largest contributor [7].

In addition, Obama was the top congressional recipient of defense industry contributions for the 2008 election cycle. See this [8] , this [9]  and this [10].

Obama was also the top recipient of money from the healthcare giants [11] [12]

No joke: Goldman Sachs shorted Gulf of Mexico

No joke: Goldman Sachs shorted Gulf of Mexico

It turns out that Goldman Sachs really did place shorts on TransOcean stock days before the explosions rocked the rig in the Gulf of Mexico sending stocks plunging while GS profits soared -- benefitting once again from a huge disaster, having done the same with airline stocks prior to 911 then again with the housing bubble.

Solution:  Sometimes coming up with a positive solution for a group like this is difficult and since I am human and imperfect I am going to indulge myself on this one.   Hang them all!!!!

On Apr. 30, the Huffington Post published a story stating:

In what is looming as another public relations predicament for Goldman Sachs, the banking giant admitted today that it made "a substantial financial bet against the Gulf of Mexico" one day before the sinking of an oil rig in that body of water.

The new revelations came to light after government investigators turned up new emails from Goldman employee Fabrice "Fabulous Fab" Tourre in which he bragged to a girlfriend that the firm was taking a "big short" position on the Gulf.

"One oil rig goes down and we're going to be rolling in dough," Mr. Tourre wrote in one email. "Suck it, fishies and birdies!"

Not being aware that the author, Andy Borowitz, is a comedian, scores of Internet sites ran with the story as being genuine. As of today, Google search on pulls up 207,000 returns, beginning with the Huffington Post link. Many, such as Infowars, pulled their stories when they realized the mistake.

Christopher Rudy noted:

The news about Goldman's bet against the Gulf comes on the heels of embarrassing revelations that the firm had taken a short position on the housing bubble, profiting from economic collapse, followed by more billions in government bailout support that paid out a couple billion in bonuses to thousands of loyal Goldman "officers" (corporate stakeholders).

We shouldn't be surprised. The owners of Goldman Sachs are the same Rothchilds co-owners of the privately held Federal Reserve Banking System, and they know how to play this game. Watch how Congress capitulates to Wall Street losses that the lap-dog press attributes to "bankster bashing".

Goldman Sachs just settled with the SEC for $450,000 (one guy's salary for a month; or the price of one nicer home lost, among millions due to the collapse) as punishment for shorting the mortgage balloon. (Ref.) They made billions in the crime.

StreetInsider.com reported on April 30 in their "Top 10" recap for that week:

Shares of Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) fell about 7% this week as execs were grilled on Capitol Hill and then, later in the week, the SEC referred its fraud case against the firm to the Justice Department for possible criminal prosecution. While much of Wall Street cheered Lloyd Blankfein's snappy responses to an onslaught of questions, Main Street rejoiced as Carl Levin "stumped" other execs with "meaningful" interrogation tactics aimed at exposing the corruption within the US financial industry.

You can certainly see why people would be quick to believe the comedian's satire piece about Goldman Sach's shorting the Gulf of Mexico.

However, just because his piece was satire, doesn't mean there isn't something to it. The reason humor is funny is because it lampoons reality, providing an exaggerative and simplified caricature to bring out the key issues in a non-threatening way. Historically, especially in times of heavy oppression, the best truth tellers have been the comedians. Benjamin Franklin certainly used humor to his advantage in helping to win America's Independence.

A. True Ott, Ph.D., wrote the following to me last night:

I have confirmed that there were indeed numerous "shorts" placed on TransOcean stock just days before the "problem". Was it Goldman Sachs? That is yet to be conclusively determined (there is indeed a SEC investigation ongoing) -- but labeling something as "satire" is a lawyer's shrewd trick to keep from being sued for slander -- even if it is all true. Moreover, there were massive shorts placed literally seconds after the news hit the airwaves.

Who would dare to quote the actual e-mails from "Fabulous Fab", unless the writer would post them as a "satire" - especially after what happened to the Wall Street Journal writers who dared expose the 9-11 short sales involving Goldman Sachs. (They were assigned to Afghanistan, and had fatal "accidents" there.)

Dr. Ott has subsequently confirmed from two sources that Goldman Sachs was indeed in on the shorts being placed on TransOcean stock. And he has confirmed that the comedian was aware of that as well.

Dr. Ott had me and Paul Noel on his two-hour radio show yesterday talking about the viral article we posted, "Mother of All Gushers Could Kill Earth's Oceans".

In response to the alleged Goldman Sach's shorting story, Paul, who is an expert on the Gulf Oil subject, provided the following intelligence:

There is a reason they could have known the rig was going to fail up to two weeks ahead of its failure. The nature of these wells is that they leave the drill mud in the well and compress using very heavy drill mud to keep the well from blowing up unlimited. The well would begin to bump (similar to boiling a big bubble) and the acoustic signals would tell the rig was in trouble that far ahead. Goldman Sacks could just have had inside info. They also know the scale of things. This is the best explanation. It could be otherwise.

If you were going to sabotage a drilling team, all you would have to do is load a lighter mud in the mix as they pulled a drill pipe. .... There are lots of ways to have this happen either accidentally or deliberately. Goldman teams are great on statistical stuff sort of like the odds of rolling dice. They might just have figured stats for probability of a failure.??? Of course we could surmise other reasons are possible.

In our interview with Dr. Ott yesterday, both Paul and myself pointed to the magnitude of this disaster as hopefully a death knell to the oil industry, spurring people to finally provide the support needed to get the myriad of free/renewable energy technologies that have been languishing into the marketplace. These would not only be much cleaner than oil, without the huge environmental consequences and risks, but in many cases they could be cheaper than fossil-based energy; and many of them provide distributed capability removing the need for a central grid.

This revelation about those with insider knowledge in fact shorting the TransOcean stock prior to the explosions, will hopefully also spell the beginning of the end of the ultra corrupt financial faction who have wrested control over the worlds financial organs. Their days are numbered as they show their true colors in the midst of an increasingly enlightened populace who will not continue to take their abuses. These ultra power and wealth addicts need to be humbled by serving time in prison with common criminals who will not give them privileged treatment. A bullet or lethal injection would be far too merciful and dignified.

Do we have a shred of clean justice left in our corrupt government system which has been bought out, blackmailed, threatened, or otherwise brought under the control of these New World Order manipulators?

It's a dark day in which we live. But I am confident that brighter days are ahead. This time of transition is going to be a wild ride.

Columbia University Trial For Treason Obama Fraud

Vatic Note: As you have probably guessed the Vatic site seldom gets into "right" or "left" issues or parties or personalities, since the creators of this blog felt that we were way beyond right or left politics. We believed that some force on an international level with no loyalty to any nation rather only to their "class", was the culprit in all that has been done to bring the country down and have used both parties to do so. The reason this is up here now, is because the issue is not a right or left issue, but a issue of "truth" and of consequences if true, to this nation of someone who is directing our nation to the shore of rocks intent on destruction. Thus this becomes an issue of trust in our leaders and those responsible for all that is occurring. Remember, even instructions to a jury state clearly, "IF YOU FIND A WITNESS LIED IN A MATTER BEFORE US, THEN YOU MUST ASSUME HE LIED IN ALL MATTERS IN HIS TESTIMONY." That is why this is up here and the solutions we have for addressing this rather serious issue. We are a nation ready to go down either politically, economically and war wise, by Obama and the congress, or/and ready to go down with a massive attack by enemies without or within on our our natural resources and system. We have a lot to look at, consider and decide to do if all is true. At least watch the videos since these were provided by Jim kirwan who has been so very right on everything he has called so far. Thank you for reading, watching and acting. These videos represent someone who had done extensive and credible research on the issue of Obama and his citizensship, and now has enough where the court has upheld the movement toward a law suit against Columbia University for selling a degree to Obama. Very interesting approach by this pastor in Harlem. Please watch these videos as the content is amazing.    Solution:   Write to the President and ask him  to resign to save the nation and himself the stress and embarrassment of future actions that would be far more unpleasant.   This way he could bow out gracefully and leave the issue behind him.  We could then get on with fixing the messes left behind by both him and Bush.  A NEW beginning.

It appears that Obama's degree was purchased, not earned, from Columbia University and
its actually going to trial. At that point, we should know what the truth is and if true, then we
will know that we have to act.  It appears Obama's passport contradicts the time frame of his attendance
to Columbia.  Its a crucial part of the case.  Listen to these videos.  The messanger is not important, but the message is.

Congress Refuses to Outlaw Insider Trading For Lawmakers

Vatic Note:   Gee, sounds like the Health Bill where our congressmen who voted for it, voted against an amendment to include them.  Remember?   In fact, congress has been voting conflict of interest even during both bailouts, one under Bush and two under Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Kerry and others should have refused to vote on the AIG bailout due to a blatant conflict of interest, which was illegal at one time, but not now.  So what is new.

Solution:   Do a referendum nationally to force Congress to abstain from such activities while in congress and make it criminal for them or any of their friends or relatives to engage in conflict of interest votes if they own shares in such companies.

(Vatics new policy is to not only give the news but attending suggestions for action and solutions to correct the problem, and ask each to both visualize these being in place and taking action to make it happen in your state or local area and work with others to do the same).

Even a cynic can find Washington's hypocrisy shocking at times. The Wall Street Journal reports http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704866204575224631314927058.html  today a House bill that would force lawmakers to make greater disclosures on financial transactions and disallow them from trading on nonpublic information is going nowhere fast.

That's right. Members of Congress are currently allowed to profit on insider trading!

The bill, which has been languishing in the House for four years, would require elected officials "to make their financial transactions public within 90 days of a purchase or sale" and "prohibit lawmakers from trading in financial markets based on nonpublic information they learn on the job," the WSJ reports.

It seems they're above the transparency they've been calling for on Wall Street.

This comes a day after the same newspaper reported several lawmakers profited by betting against the housing and stock market in 2008. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB20001424052748703871904575216491495135642.html  And some did it using derivatives they've recently been railing against.

As our colleague Henry Blodget wrote Tuesday, http://finance.yahoo.com/tech-ticker/congressional-hypocrites-were-betting-against-stocks-as-country-collapsed-477789.html?tickers=gs,xlf,spy,%5Edji,%5Egspc,%5Eixic,qqqq  "If you're going to complain about how awful short-selling is and how evil and venal people are for doing it, you should probably abstain from the practice yourself."

GMO alert: U.S. attempting global censorship of GMO food labeling

Vatic Note:  Remember yesterday we covered articles proving Monsanto frauded studies on the effects of GMO in order to meet the requirements put out by India for their seeds, which resulted in their approval, but as previous Vatic articles showed these seeds resulted in devastation to the cotton crop and also resulted in massive suicides for farmers there.   Many countries around the globe still ban Monsanto GM seeds and we need to do the same.

Solution:  there are lists of foods and companies that are not GMO and we need to obtain that list and pass it around to all our family, friends and neighbors to begin the process of purchasing only non GMO foods.
In the meantime to write to the congress and tell them no on GMO foods and we want them labeled and identified.   I know they dont listen to us, but if enough of us do this, it may well causes a change that we cannot forsee.   Lets try it anyway.  Don't forget, election is just around the corner.

GMO alert: U.S. attempting global censorship of GMO food labeling

(NaturalNews) I received an urgent alert from Jeffrey Smith today about a dangerous situation taking place right now at the international CODEX conference. The U.S. is attempting to push its agenda to censor all GMO labeling of foods everywhere around the world. This would result in a global GMO cover-up as consumers are left in the dark about whether their foods and grocery products are genetically modified or not.

Your help is urgently needed to send a message to the Secretaries of State (Clinton), Agriculture (Vilsack), and Health and Human Services (Sebelius) to urge them to halt the USA's nefarious attempts to install a global GMO deception.

Take part in this online petition, go here:
http://www.seedsofdeception.com/GMF...

Please understand that the U.S. is attempting to outlaw non-GMO labeling of foods, thereby making it illegal for a non-GMO food product to even claim "non-GMO" on the label. If the U.S. succeeds in this global GMO cover-up, the FDA could seize any products in the USA that make "non-GMO" claims. Additionally, the USA could file lawsuits through the World Trade Organization against any country that allows non-GMO labeling or claims on its products.

Why is the U.S. pursuing such a devious and sinister course of action? Because, as you well know, virtually the entire federal government caters to the financial interests of powerful corporations -- and these include the "Big Ag" giants like Monsanto that want to patent all seeds while destroying the no-GMOs movement. Slick Operator: The BP I've known too well

Vatic Note:   UPDATE:  BP is fully at fault, it appears they lied to Halliburton as to depth they were going to drill which was deeper than what they told Halliburton.   Now this could be true if you believe neither of them would lie?  uh hum.   Thus Halliburton put on too small a cap for the pressure and that is what contributed to the blow out.  Greg updates us with this info at the end of the article.   Read to the end.

Solution:  If everyone practiced always tellling the truth, no matter what, then we would eventually set an environment where all corporations, politicians, and bankers would do the same.  Lead by example

Slick Operator: The BP I've known too well

by Greg Palast for Truthout.org
May 5, 2010

I've seen this movie before. In 1989, I was a fraud investigator hired to dig into the cause of the Exxon Valdez disaster. Despite Exxon's name on that boat, I found the party most to blame for the destruction was ... British Petroleum. That's important to know, because the way BP caused devastation in Alaska is exactly the way BP is now sliming the entire Gulf Coast.

Deepwater Horizon in flames before sinking. Photo provided by D.BecnelTankers run aground, wells blow out, pipes burst. It shouldn't happen but it does. And when it does, the name of the game is containment. Both in Alaska, when the Exxon Valdez grounded, and in the Gulf over a week ago, when the Deepwater Horizon platform blew, it was British Petroleum that was charged with carrying out the Oil Spill Response Plans ("OSRP") which the company itself drafted and filed with the government.

What's so insane, when I look over that sickening slick moving toward the Delta, is that containing spilled oil is really quite simple and easy. And from my investigation, BP has figured out a very low cost way to prepare for this task: BP lies. BP prevaricates, BP fabricates and BP obfuscates.

That's because responding to a spill may be easy and simple, but not at all cheap. And BP is cheap. Deadly cheap.

To contain a spill, the main thing you need is a lot of rubber, long skirts of it called "boom." Quickly surround a spill or leak or burst, then pump it out into skimmers or disperse it, sink it or burn it. Simple.

But there's one thing about the rubber skirts: you've got to have lots of it at the ready, with crews on standby in helicopters and on containment barges ready to roll. They have to be in place round the clock, all the time, just like a fire department; even when all is operating A-OK. Because rapid response is the key. In Alaska, that was BP's job, as principal owner of the pipeline consortium Alyeska. It is, as well, BP's job in the Gulf, as principal lessee of the deepwater oil concession.

UPDATE: Iran offers to help contain US oil spill (and we want to bomb them? No way)

Vatic Note:  Its becoming more and more obvious that Iran has absolutely no agressive intentions toward the US.  Its also becoming obvious that Israel wants to confiscate Irans wealth and oil fields which is not a legal justification to attack another nation.   At this point we should withdraw from supporting Israel in this adventure.  Where are Israels offers to help us???  LOL   Yeah, right!   Reminds me of Katrina, our government refusing all aid and assistance from other countries which helped us to see the "war game" nature of the event by refusing to aid the victims for a full three days after the event.   lets see if our nation will accept help and aid from other nations, otherwise this will look like the Sampson Option by those running our government.  Its time to start putting solutions up to these problems we keep pointing out.   Here is the first one below.  Its something WE can do and not rely on our elected officials.

Solution:  Strategy and tactic,  image Iran helping us and succeeding in making the oil flow stop and then image us having a healthy and great mutually beneficial relationship with Iran.  Another option is for us to send a letter to the Iranian people thanking them for their offer.  I think that would be a great idea.

The National Iranian Drilling Company (NIDC) has offered to assist the US in efforts to prevent an ecological disaster caused by the spreading oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Following an explosion on a BP-operated oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico last month, at least 210,000 gallons (5,000 barrels) of crude oil are thought to be spilling into the water every day.

NIDC managing director Heidar Bahmani announced the firm's readiness to use its decades-long expertise to fight the oil slick, the company's public relations office told Press TV.

"Our oil industry experts in the field of drilling can contain the rig leakage in the Gulf of Mexico and prevent an ecological disaster in that part of the world," Bahmani said.

Overlooking the new US drive for slapping more UN sanctions on Iran over its civilian nuclear program, the company said that there is an urgent need for action to protect the nearby coasts from the advancing oil spill.

The governors of Alabama, Louisiana and Florida have reportedly called a state of emergency for fear of the oil slick's environmental and economic damages.

The disaster has also prompted the White House to ban oil drillings in new areas of the US coast until the British company explains the cause of the explosion that killed 11 employees and resulted in the oil spill.

UPDATE: Soviet nuclear solution could be part of tactics to halt oil spill off US coast

Vatic Note:   We just completed a big article on DU poisoning that is now blowing all over the planet and the damage its doing in the countries where we have bombed and used DU covered shells.  This poison in literally killing species and people and causing severe massive birth defects, which may well be part of the agenda for depopulation.  Now we are talking about using this irradiation right off our shores of this country that will result in radiation carried along the path of the trade winds.   I guess the choices are a slow death for the planet or a quick one with the slug, oil etc coming out of the rig accident.  Not much of a choice is it???
Solution:  focus on solving the oil gushing problem by conventional means and encourage our government to use the offers of assistance from the various oil well trouble shooters and nations who have experience in this field.  Send a letter of Thanks to the Russian people for offering their advice.

Urta-Burlak gas field, Uzbekistan

A giant funnel is being built in the Gulf of Mexico to channel the oil spill from the seabed to surface. But since there is no guarantee it will work, Russian experts think Soviet history may offer a radical solution.

A pillar of fire 120 meters tall. That alone is tough to extinguish, but when the fire is fueled by natural gas, it becomes virtually impossible.

In 1963, one of the Soviet Union's gas-rich locations was badly drilled. The resulting fire burned for three years, with the intensity never waning. All possible ways of fighting the flames were tried – to no avail.

“It was 12 million cubic meters of gas, burning daily. Now multiply that by 3 years. And the price of gas! Nothing worked, the flames were unstoppable. So our boss, the Minister of Nuclear Energy, came to us, and said ‘Boys, let’s help out.’ And we did,” nuclear physicist Albert Vasiliev remembers.

The offered solution? A nuclear explosion. Now, that to a layman might sound like swapping a big problem for an even bigger one. But that is not necessarily the case.

“Think of this as a doctor's case. You have a small problem – you take some pills, maybe stay in hospital for a while. But if the problem is incredibly serious, you will probably have to undergo surgery. This is what we were – surgeons. It was a last resort, but it worked,” Albert Vasiliev says.

It was nowhere as easy as it sounds, however. Although peaceful nuclear explosions had been tested in both the Soviet Union and the United States by this point, to use a nuclear device for such a measure was a first.

“The idea was to drill a small, angled shaft and set off the bomb, so that the explosion would block the leak. But people weren't sure where to drill, because no one knew exactly where the pipe leak was. And it was so loud. You can't imagine what a fire like this sounds like. Worse than a hundred jet planes all at once. Difficult to access, difficult to work close to – it was a tough job,” former science editor of Komsomolskaya Pravda daily, Vladimir Gurbaev told RT.

Despite these problems, all went well. The leak was closed. The method was pronounced effective and later used on several other similar problems.

"The explosion should be carried out above the leaking hole. After the blast the hole seals up. It's similar to stopping the oxygen supply in a human being," explained Vyacheslav Klishin, physicist and nuclear gas-well fire fighter.

Now, some have already suggested that this approach could help stop the catastrophic oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.

"If the explosive element fits the well, then it's possible to use it in this case. Anyway, workers in the Gulf need to tie up the well where oil leaks out and there are two possible ways to do it: a nuclear explosion or another well," Vyacheslav Kishin said.

But the situations are very different – the Soviet gas leak was in the middle of a desert, with not much flora and fauna to suffer from potential after-effects.

The Gulf's wildlife is already critically damaged by the leak. A nuclear explosion, however small, may add to the ecological disaster rather than prevent it.

Dealing with the devastation of the oil spill is one thing, but fingers of blame are also being pointed over the catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico. RT spoke to investigative journalist Webster Tarpley over whether lawmakers have been putting profits before people.

“Under Bush we had something called Minerals Management Agency. This was basically taken apart. The thing that seems to have malfunctioned is concrete casement at the bottom of the ocean – on the ocean floor a mile down – that seems to be defective. The other thing is that there should have been an automatic cut-off valve in this drilling rig, which was not there because of lax standards under Bush and Cheney and of course Obama, Salazar and company have done nothing to change this,” Tarpley said. “It is a disaster that has been caused by lack of regulation, insufficient enforcement and that’s where we get these results.”

UPDATE: Goldman Sachs Reveals it Shorted Gulf of Mexico

NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report) - In what is looming as another public relations predicament for Goldman Sachs, the banking giant admitted today that it made "a substantial financial bet against the Gulf of Mexico" one day before the sinking of an oil rig in that body of water.

The news about Goldman's bet against the Gulf comes on the heels of embarrassing revelations that the firm had taken a short position on Lindsay Lohan's acting career. More here.

GORDON DUFF: TIMES SQUARE BOMB HOAX, ISRAELI INTEL GROUP SHOWS IT’S HAND

Vatic Master:   We have put up links galore proving the US and Mossad were funding taliban in Pakistan and afghanistan.   So it begs the question, who were these two terrorists working for?  One in NYC and one in Pakistan arrested.  Remember, all attempts by the neocons through the SPLC and ADL to cause fear and division between the left and right here in this country have not worked as they have in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan.   So, what to do???  Create another bogus terrorist attack that doesn't work, just like the shoe bomber who was connected to mossad,  the panty bomber, released by Cheney from GITMO, and not on a terror watch list and now another terrorist attempt that is considered  PATHETIC at best.   Those were all our first thoughts and how the news COVERED UP ALL THE WEIRD ANOMOLIES OF THE OIL RIG DISASTER,  and timing matched the information coming out from the survivors of the rig's disaster.  They relayed to us that a supply ship arrived without the normal crew, rather all new members of the crew that no one knew.   Finally, we have GOLDMAN SACHS SHORTING STOCK ON The Gulf of Mexico.
Here is an email from a Goldman Sucks employee: ""One oil rig goes down and we're going to be rolling in dough," Mr. Tourre wrote in one email. "Suck it, fishies and birdies!"   Yes, shades of 9-11.

ISRAELIS BLAME TALIBAN GROUP, ONE THEY HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH FOR YEARS

By Gordon Duff STAFF WRITER Senior Editor

Who would have believed it? Only days after a warning of an Israeli “false flag” bombing against the US “in the works” a massive car bomb is discovered in Time Square! Better yet, though no intelligence organization in the world could discover anyone claiming responsibility for this embarrassing failure, SITE Intelligence, a group rumored as the “voice of the Mossad” has placed the blame on the Pakistani Taliban.

UPDATE: from an eyewitness to the BP explosion

Vatic Note:   As I stated before, this situation is fluid and all of us have contributed bits and pieces to what appears to be the big picture, however, it is now becoming refined based on the contributions of those who survived the ordeal.   This is narrated by someone who listened to the broadcast, who works with this equipment and adds his own knowledge of the equipment to the broadcast for legitimacy.   Please read this and then listen to the broad cast so it makes sense.

Radio Interview with Someone who was an eye witness to BP explosion

UPDATE ON THE RADIO INTERVIEW located at

See 2nd interview where he talks about what ignited the gas and first explosion
http://www.marklevinshow.com/Article.asp?id=1790422&spid=32364

OK, here goes. I am told that the casing at the sea floor was concreted in-- with 20 feet of concrete-- 24 hours before the event on  the rig-- by Halliburton. And that to do that, the blowout preventers (I understand that they use two, like inboard and outboard isolation--I'm not dead certain of that). were closed. That this rig  was being prepared to be moved off and a production rig brought in. At that point, they would 'core' the concrete plug, hook up, and the blowout preventers opened and production established.

This means that there was no pathway for nat gas to fill the rig to  cause an explosion.

I am told that the blowout preventers are fail-closed hydraulically  actuated, with monster actuators. I understand that they essentially  function like excess flow check valves. Too much flow starts going through, the valves automatically close without manual intervention.

If you recall, it was reported that the 'acoustically operated blowout  preventers' would not respond to a close signal after the explosions and fire on the rig. I am told that this means they have been  disabled, one way or another. By explosion, by something. THEY ARE FAIL CLOSED.

I am told that the sea was calm, and that a service boat in near  vicinity to the rig heard what they interpreted to be an undersea  explosion, and the boat was rocked a short time afterward by a 'surge' on the surface. And then the stuff began to hit the fan.   I am led to believe that there are layer upon layer upon layer of  redundant fail-safes on this rig, and that the rig is state of the art.

I am told that Boots and Coots, as well as Red Adair's companies (there have been some ownership shuffling in the last years--Halliburton now owns Boots and Coots, as I understand) were point  blank refused after the event occurred and these companies offered  their services.

And I am told that the word 'bomb' is never, ever used in any respect in the oil bidness. The guy on the radio interview used the word at  least twice.

I have no reason to doubt what I am told. But I do not have the expertise to fully judge in depth either the mark levin story or the story I have been told. I understand the equipment being described, but my expertise in HOW the equipment is employed is lacking.  I am listening to the 2nd part of the radio call again. He definitely used the word 'bomb' at least twice.

This is what I know, or have been told, as of now. and therefore I am again left in the dark as to what actually and truly happened. And I am led to believe that the drilling rigs in the Gulf (not yet at this
point the production rigs) have been shut down.

The Silent Genocide from America

Vatic Note:  My note on this is said by someone else, please read it carefully.  Thanks  This is a letter to us from the Mujahideen of Afghanistan.  Please read it carefully since they say somethings in there that should give us pause as Americans.

"Tell America, we are not fools. Your words and actions are those of evil. We do not have airplanes like you do, however, we have one thing that you do not have, principles and morals. We will never do anything remotely similar to American children what Americans have done to our children and families. They might win some fights, but we have already won the big fight, the moral ground."

Mujahideen Of Islamic Emirate Of Afghanistan

Lets prove them wrong,  lets prove we do have a moral High ground and we are willing to risk everything to reach it and occupy it from within our own treasonous government that is now slowly tightening the repressive belt around our necks with the food bill and water issues in order to control us.  Its time we showed them this is not going to work.   Lets be the Americans we once were.  WE ARE POWERFUL TOGETHER.

When Bush jr. said, "we will smoke them out…" he lived up to his promise, making life an unattainable reality for the unborn and unsustainable reality for the living sentencing the Afghan people and their future generations to a predetermined death sentence.

"After the Americans destroyed our village and killed many of us, we also lost our houses and have nothing to eat. However, we would have endured these miseries and even accepted them, if the Americans had not sentenced us all to death. When I saw my deformed grandson, I realized that my hopes of the future have vanished for good, different from the hopelessness of the Russian barbarism, even though at that time I lost my older son Shafiqullah. This time, however, I know we are part of the invisible genocide brought on us by America, a silence death from which I know we will not escape." (Jooma Khan of Laghman province, March 2003)

Colleague Disputes Case Against Anthrax Suspect

Colleague Disputes Case Against Anthrax Suspect
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/23/us/23anthrax.html?pagewanted=print
By SCOTT SHANE

WASHINGTON — A former Army microbiologist who worked for years with Bruce E. Ivins, whom the F.B.I. has blamed for the anthrax letter attacks that killed five people in 2001, told a National Academy of Sciences panel on Thursday that he believed it was impossible that the deadly spores had been produced undetected in Dr. Ivins’s laboratory, as the F.B.I. asserts.

Asked by reporters after his testimony whether he believed that there was any chance that Dr. Ivins, who committed suicide in 2008, had carried out the attacks, the microbiologist, Henry S. Heine, replied, “Absolutely not.” At the Army’s biodefense laboratory in Maryland, where Dr. Ivins and Dr. Heine worked, he said, “among the senior scientists, no one believes it.”

Dr. Heine told the 16-member panel, which is reviewing the F.B.I.’s scientific work on the investigation, that producing the quantity of spores in the letters would have taken at least a year of intensive work using the equipment at the army lab. Such an effort would not have escaped colleagues’ notice, he added later, and lab technicians who worked closely with Dr. Ivins have told him they saw no such work.

He told the panel that biological containment measures where Dr. Ivins worked were inadequate to prevent the spores from floating out of the laboratory into animal cages and offices. “You’d have had dead animals or dead people,” he said.

The public remarks from Dr. Heine, two months after the Justice Department officially closed the case, represent a major public challenge to its conclusion in one of the largest, most politically delicate and scientifically complex cases in F.B.I. history.

The F.B.I. declined to comment on Dr. Heine’s remarks on Thursday. In its written summation of the case in February, the bureau said Dr. Ivins’s lab technicians grew anthrax spores that the technicians incorrectly believed were added to Dr. Ivins’s main supply flask. But the summary said the spores were never added to the flask, suggesting that surplus spores might have been diverted by Dr. Ivins for the letters.

Some scientists and members of Congress protested in February when the Justice Department closed the case, saying it should have waited for the academy panel’s conclusions. The F.B.I. asked the panel last year to review the bureau’s scientific work on the case, though not its conclusion on the perpetrator’s identity.

Members of the panel, whose chairwoman is Alice P. Gast, a chemical engineer and president of Lehigh University, declined to comment on Dr. Heine’s testimony or his remarks to reporters. The panel is expected to complete its report this fall.

Since shortly after Dr. Ivins took a lethal dose of Tylenol in July 2008 and the Justice Department first named him as the anthrax mailer, some former colleagues have rejected the F.B.I.’s conclusion and said they thought he was innocent. They have acknowledged, as Dr. Heine did on Thursday, that they wanted to clear the name of their friend and defend their laboratory, the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases. Dr. Heine said he had been treated as a suspect himself at one point and understood the pressure Dr. Ivins was under.

Asked why he was speaking out now, Dr. Heine noted that Army officials had prohibited comment on the case, silencing him until he left the government laboratory in late February. He now works for Ordway Research Institute in Albany.

Dr. Heine said he did not dispute that there was a genetic link between the spores in the letters and the anthrax in Dr. Ivins’s flask — a link that led the F.B.I. to conclude that Dr. Ivins had grown the spores from a sample taken from the flask. But samples from the flask were widely shared, Dr. Heine said. Accusing Dr. Ivins of the attacks, he said, was like tracing a murder to the clerk at the sporting goods shop who sold the bullets.

“Whoever did this is still running around out there,” Dr. Heine said. “I truly believe that.”

Ex Monsanto Lawyer Clarence Thomas to Hear Major Monsanto Case

Celcias, March 11, 2010

In Monsanto v. Geertson Seed Farms, No. 09-475, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in a case which could have an enormous effect on the future of the American food industry. This is Monsanto's third appeal of the case, and if they win a favorable ruling from the high court, a deregulated Monsanto may find itself in position to corner the markets of numerous U.S. crops, and to litigate conventional farmers into oblivion.

Here's where it gets a bit dicier. Two Supreme Court justices have what appear to be direct conflicts of interest.

Stephen Breyer

Charles Breyer, the judge who ruled in the original decision of 2007 which is being appealed, is Stephen Breyer's brother, who apparently views this as a conflict of interest and has recused himself.

Clarence Thomas

From the years 1976 - 1979, Thomas worked as an attorney for Monsanto. Thomas apparently does not see this as a conflict of interest and has not recused himself.

Fox, meet henhouse.

Monsanto Submitted "Fake Scientific Data" Says Former Exec

Monsanto Submitted "Fake Scientific Data" Says Former Exec
http://www.celsias.com/article/monsanto-submitted-fake-scientific-data-says-forme/

by D. Snodgrass
India Today and submitted by Celsias

2/28/10

Monsanto's former managing director of India operations is talking, and it's not pretty for the behemoth of genetic modification. Tiruvadi Jagadisan is accusing his former employer of faking scientific data with the intent of evading the government's regulatory requirements.

The 84 year-old Jagadisan is quoted as saying, "I retired from the company as I felt the management of Monsanto, USA, was exploiting our country." Jagadisan had been with Monsanto for almost 20 years.

Jagadisan claims Monsanto had willing enablers within India's regulatory machine who Monsanto appeared eager to access.

...the company "used to fake scientific data" submitted to government regulatory agencies to get commercial approvals for its products in India.

The former Monsanto boss said government regulatory agencies with which the company used to deal with in the 1980s simply depended on data supplied by the company while giving approvals to herbicides.

"The Central Insecticide Board was supposed to give these approvals based on the location and crop-specific data from India. But it simply accepted foreign data supplied by Monsanto. They did not even have a test tube to validate the data and, at times, the data itself was faked," Jagadisan said.

Incredibly, Monsanto's response to the allegation appears to put the blame squarely on the Indian regulatory system for accepting the bogus data.

Asked to comment on Jagadisan's allegations, a Monsanto spokesperson said: "We have full faith in the Indian regulatory system, which has its checks and measures in place to ensure accuracy and authenticity of data furnished to them." On approval of GM crops, the spokesperson said the regulatory process was stringent and "no biotech crops are allowed in the market until they undergo extensive and rigid crop safety assessments, following strict scientific protocols".

It appears that Jagadasian's accusation has contributed to a decision that hits Monsanto where it hurts most.

The Indian Government has banned the growing of genetically manipulated (GM) eggplant. The ban will remain until independent scientific studies satisfy the public and experts that the crop has no long term negative impacts on human health and the environment.

"This is a stunning victory for India's precautionary approach to GM crops," says Gene Ethics Director Bob Phelps.
[…]
"Influencing the Indian decision was the whistle-blown by Tiruvadi Jagadisan, a former Monsanto Director, who publicly disclosed that the company had faked scientific data to gain regulatory approvals.

Based on past history, what the Indian Government actually does with the independent scientific studies bears watching

New Unveiled ‘US Army [One] Health Command’ (USAPHC) Prov

Vatic Note: What we are looking at here is the military is now becoming a one Health command center. They are in charge of public health and are called the public health command center for the entire country. Did the universal health care bill militarize our health care as well now? What does it mean to put our public health in the hands of those who make bioweapons??? Do they make bioweapons that are dangerous to humans? Given their history of using military personnel for medical experiments without their permission or knowledge, is that what will happen in our universal health care now???  Will update as I find out more information on this.

Here is an example of something the military created and patented that is harmful to humans and has been found in tests done of gulf war veterens who apparently are the unwitting experimental targets of these experiments.

"Dr. Garth Nicolson, President of The Institute for Molecular Medicine, and Joyce Riley of The American Gulf War Veterans Assoc., among others, feel that Gulf War Illness is spreading to the general public and is being divided up into separate disease labels such as those listed above. Many patients with these disease labels are sending their blood to be tested at The Institute for Molecular Medicine and The Bowen Lab, are finding they are infected with mycoplasma and or the Lyme Disease organism. The Bowen Lab specializes in testing for the cyst form of the Lyme organism and for Erlichiosis and Babesiosis (other tick-borne infections). Mycoplasma and the cyst form of the Lyme spirochete are being found in much of the chronic illness population. Mycoplasma Fermentens Incognitus, one of the most common strains being isolated, is patented by the U.S. Army and Army pathologist Dr. Lo. Lo,Shyh-Ching-Pathogenic mycoplasma - U.S. Patent 5,242,820 issued Sept.7 1993".

What else don't we know about now??? Its hard to say, there has been so much we are finding out. If I were in the military I would get out as it is beginning to mean a very shortened life span to stay in and that isn't because of our foreign enemies, its because of our enemies right here are home.

Citizen Outrage Causes US Army to Change Website

New Unveiled ‘US Army [One] Health Command’ Header

As a result of media coverage and citizen outrage of the new One Health referred to as US Army Health Command the US Army has changed their website:

Old: http://chppm-www.apgea.army.mil/

New: http://phc.amedd.army.mil/home

Below is the small print on their website in regard to the integration to the [One] Health Command:
Notice it reads "The US Army Public Health Command"   USAPHC (Prov).   What is "Prov"?  Is that like "Province"?   Whatever it is they just militarized health care.   Becareful what you ask for,  you just might get it.

Karzai frets as U.S. builds up Afghan militias

Vatic Note:   This is interesting.   Karzai doesn't want the very successful program of the villages bringing peace and order back to their districts by being expanded.   The local militias are dealing very well with containing the Taliban and yet the US and Karzai refuse to expand it into other areas???  Why???  Could it be the drug trade?   Could it be the US paying the Taliban to do what they do would be counteracted by expanding such a program???  I suspect it just might have some impact on their decision not to expand it.  But really, its a mystery to me.

Karzai frets as U.S. builds up Afghan militias

‘This is playing with fire,’ warns one government official

ARGHANDAB DISTRICT, Afghanistan - Taliban fighters used to swagger with impunity through this farming village, threatening to assassinate government collaborators. They seeded the main thoroughfare, a dirt road with moonlike craters, with land mines. They paid local men to attack U.S. and Afghan troops.

Then, beginning in late February, a small detachment of U.S. Special Forces soldiers organized nearly two dozen villagers into an armed Afghan-style neighborhood watch group.

These days, the bazaar is thriving. The schoolhouse has reopened. People in the area have become confident enough to report Taliban activity to the village defense force and the police. As a consequence, insurgent attacks have nearly ceased and U.S. soldiers have not hit a single roadside bomb in the area in two months, according to the detachment.

"Everyone feels safer now," said Nasarullah, one of two gray-bearded tribal elders in charge of the village force. "Nobody worries about getting killed anymore."

The rapid and profound changes have generated excitement among top U.S. military officials in Afghanistan, fueling hope that such groups could reverse insurgent gains by providing the population a degree of protection that the police, the Afghan army and even international military forces have been unable to deliver.

'What happens tomorrow?'

But plans to expand the program have been stymied by Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who fears the teams could turn into offensive militias, the sorts of which wreaked havoc on the country in the 1990s and prompted the rise of the Taliban. "This is playing with fire," an Afghan government official said. "These groups may bring us security today, but what happens tomorrow?"

Citing Karzai's objections, Karl W. Eikenberry, the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, has blocked the release of money needed to broaden the initiative. He also has instructed State Department personnel in the country not to assist the effort until the Afghan government endorses it.

In addition to sharing Karzai's concerns about what would happen to the local defense forces once U.S. oversight ends, Eikenberry and other embassy officials worry that the program would weaken the central government in the eyes of the public and compete with efforts to build up the nation's army and police.

"At the end of the day, how sustainable would a program like this be?" said a State Department official based in Kabul, who like other officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal disputes. "It runs counter to the goal of giving the state a monopoly of force."

The military's interest in local-defense initiatives is driven in large part by President Obama's July 2011 deadline to begin withdrawing combat forces, which has increased pressure on commanders to demonstrate clear progress in their counterinsurgency mission this year.

Some military officials have expressed frustration that U.S. diplomats in Kabul have not done more to lobby Karzai and other Afghan officials to change their minds. Interior Minister Hanif Atmar, who had been supportive of the initiative earlier in the year, told participants at a U.S.-Afghan planning session this month that he no longer sanctions it, a reversal that military officials attribute to pressure from Karzai.

Atmar instead wants the United States to expand a different local-defense program, which is under the control of his ministry and has been implemented in one province in the east, but U.S. commanders think it will not be as effective as the approach undertaken in Afghanistan.

Promising signs

Instead of waiting for Karzai's approval, the Special Forces command has moved forward with pilot projects here and in nine other villages, hoping to show that the forces being created are not militias. The command allowed a Washington Post reporter to visit four of the sites this month.

"There are signs of real promise," said Brig. Gen. Austin S. Miller, the top special operations commander in Afghanistan.

A senior U.S. military official said Karzai has provided a tacit blessing for a small number of experiments so long as the forces that are created are connected in some way to the Afghan government. The official said the Special Forces aims to build those links.

In Washington, a senior administration official involved in Afghanistan policy said the experiments have prompted interest — and cautious support — in the White House. "These sorts of bottom-up solutions need to be part of the equation," the official said.

When a detachment from the 1st Special Forces Group arrived here in mid-January, it seemed like a good place to experiment with the Local Defense Initiative. This part of the fertile Arghandab valley is a key route for insurgents seeking to infiltrate the city of Kandahar, located less than 20 miles away. The population here is made up largely of ethnic Pashtuns who belong to the Alokozai tribe. Their leadership has been generally supportive of the Afghan government.

But when the soldiers asked the principal tribal leaders in the area to gather to discuss security matters, they were rebuffed.

"The only thing they could agree on was saying to us, 'We don't need your help,'" the detachment commander said. U.S. military officials requested that members of the unit, as well as the name of the village, not be identified because of operational security concerns.

The soldiers responded by setting out to drink endless cups of tea with the elders. Instead of driving around in large land-mine-resistant vehicles as conventional U.S. Army units do, the soldiers jumped on camouflage-painted dirt bikes and four-wheel all-terrain vehicles equipped with a front mount for an M240 machine gun and a rear rack upon which a few AT-4 small rockets can be lashed. Their mode of transportation mirrored that of their Special Forces brethren riding horseback with troops of the Northern Alliance in 2001.

The goal was to win support for a program that was hatched at a Pentagon City sports bar last year by Special Forces Lt. Col. David S. Mann and Seth Jones, a Rand Corp. political scientist who focuses on Afghanistan.

They questioned whether the United States and NATO were missing an opportunity by concentrating so many resources on building up the national police, the army and other formal institutions, arguing that the Afghans should try to re-create the informal village-level defense forces that existed in parts of the country when it was a monarchy.

Mann and Jones's plan, which senior U.S. commanders endorsed, seeks to allay fears that the effort will breed militias: The forces are not paid or given weapons, and to minimize the risk of warlordism, they are supposed to be under the authority of a group of tribal elders — not just one person.

Within a month, the promise of modest reconstruction projects paid for with the military's discretionary money managed to sway the locals. Nasarullah, who is the Alokozai leader in the village, agreed to sit down with Mohammed Aman, the leader of the minority Kakar tribesmen in the area. A few weeks later, the 22-member force was formed, drawn principally from the Alokozai but with the support of the Kakar.

Marksmanship, first aid

The detachment has trained the members in rifle marksmanship, basic first aid and how to conduct a patrol. They also have received lessons on setting up traffic checkpoints and searching vehicles.

Those selected were eager to participate but they initially insisted on being paid for their work — a line the Special Forces did not want to cross. After extensive negotiations, they compromised: Members of the defense force would receive $10 a day, but they would have to spend part of their time working on reconstruction projects.

"They're pulling security and laying bricks," the commander said.

The defense force appears more ragtag than fearsome militia. Although the members wear matching army-green shalwar kameez and camouflage vests, they have all manner of footwear and headdress. Their AK-47s are battered, and they show more interest in lolling about their compound than imposing authority on the village.

But that does not seem to trouble the soldiers here. The measure of their effectiveness, say members of the detachment, has more to do with perceptions of security among the villagers than the amount of time the force struts around.

"They're a tripwire," Mann said. "The fact that they're guaranteeing safety is the essence of the program."

Letter from the Taliban

To the soldiers here, the clearest measure of the change that has occurred may not be in statistics or comments from residents, but in a one-page handwritten letter, placed in an air-mail envelope and dropped under the gate of the local defense force compound last week.

It was addressed to Toorjan, the commander of one of the two police checkpoints on the main dirt road — the only Afghan government presence in the area. In January, he hit a roadside bomb while driving through the bazaar. He was not seriously injured, but his truck was destroyed.

The letter, from a person who said he was a local supporter of the Taliban, was an olive branch of sorts. The writer blamed the bombing, which he said he witnessed, on fighters from Pakistan, and he suggested he was open to switching sides.

"The local Taliban are our neighbors," Toorjan said. "Now that the security is better, they have no other choice but to support us."

Even if the Special Forces get the authority and funding to expand the initiative, replicating what has unfolded here will not be easy.

It has taken three months of intense effort by one detachment to turn around — for the moment — just one village. Although there are several dozen detachments in Afghanistan, not all of them could be reassigned to this task. And even if a few dozen villages were flipped, it may not have the hoped-for strategic impact.

Among members of the village defense force here, however, questions of growth are less important than what happens once the flow of U.S. cash ends. Will the group demobilize? Or will it, like so many other armed outfits in Afghanistan's history, morph into something larger and more troublesome?

Nasarullah, the local elder, insists that he does not have the money, or the desire, to sustain the effort himself. Even the members do not regard their current roles as a permanent occupation. Some said they would like to join the police. Others said they will go back to their farms.

"I am only doing this for my village," said Zahir Jan, who owns a small shop in Kandahar that he has entrusted to his brother while he serves in the defense force. "I am looking forward to the day I can put my gun down. But that day has not arrived."
